What is UJFM?
UJFM was originally known as RAU Radio and has been a student run radio station since 1987 RAU Radio was awarded a 50km radius frequency in 2000, this was contested by The Voice and ended up in a court battle that lasted 2 years. RAU Radio won the court case and officially started broadcasting on the frequency 95.4FM on 13 March 2006. In the interim RAU mergered with TWR and is now known as University of Johannesburg, due to this RAU Radio had to change it’s name to UJFM.
UJFM broadcasts on the frequency 95.4FM for a 50km radius and is situated on the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus of the University of Johannesburg. UJFM is a run by students currently studying at University of Johannesburg. UJFM runs 24/7 and is on air for the whole year. UJFM caters for the youth market comprising of people in the age group of 16 – 30 years old and who fall into the LSM groups of 7-10. Our programming format comprises of a variety of education, community and specialty shows aimed to keep our listeners informed and entertained simultaneously. Currently we are going through a transformation where before our music content was predominantly rock, it will now be an eclectic mix of urban, rock and pop with a huge emphasis on promoting SA music (40%). We also have specialty shows that cater for some of these genres as well as other genres like Ragga and Metal. We pride ourselves on being current and playing music that won’t be aired, necessarily on commercial stations, thus offering the listener a variety of good music. Hence our slogan “ The Noise of choice”.
