Inaugural UJFM 2011 Awards Exceed Expectations

By Andrew Hope

UJFM 95.4 has long been an undeniable breeding ground of radio, with many avid presenters going onto to fuel the minds of millions within the upper echelons of Commercial radio.

This honour doesn’t come with a cheap price tag though as it takes the most dedicated professionals to succeed in an industry booming with hungry individuals.

Professionals such as Guest Speaker, Miss. Gugulethu Mfuphi, 23, who since exiting the doors of UJFM 95.4 has gone on to excel on this cutting edge medium, and currently holds the position of ICT journalist at Moneyweb.

Gugu Mfuphi

Gugu as she is known to us, relayed her experience to the current team at The Inaugural UJFM 95.4 Awards, which were held at The School of Tourism and Hospitality (STH) on the University of Johannesburg’s Bunting Road Campus, on November 24, 2011.

Having a dream is your priority, working hard and making sacrifices is in order to obtain this dream. One needs to be focused and should never take for granted the opportunity presented to you by UJFM, it provides you with an incredible platform to hone your skills and is a solid support system,” said Gugu.

The wisdom shown beyond Gugu’s tender age certainly motivated those in attendance to reach greater heights.

The Inaugural Awards, meanwhile, formed culmination of the year’s success and were to recognise individuals who have dedicated countless hours over the past year to perfecting the art of radio, and aiding the station to become the credible entity that it is today.

The awards exceeded its promise as an interactive and entertaining occasion hosted by Mummy Mohlahlo (UJFM 95.4 Interviews and Special Projects Manager / Continental Breakfast Show News Reader) and yours truly.

Masters of Ceremony

The biggest winner of the night was Waleed “Magic” Majiet Al Yamani who was nominated by the UJFM 95.4 Staff as Presenter of the Year. Magic’s Continental Breakfast Show also scooped the Show of the Year accolade, edging The Drive, hosted by Nick Cruz, The Urban Brunch, hosted by Rose Mosenhoi and, The Sports Network, hosted by some guy I can’t think of right now…

Pure Magic

Sports Presenter of the Year was a tightly contested award, which by a solitary vote went to Tlou Ramphele who can be heard most morning’s on the Continental Breakfast Show, 06h00 – 09h00. Tlou had beaten Jan Sello Langa, Kemera Reuban and Koketso Gaofetoge to the finish line.

The Pencil Boy!

Newsreader of the Year could have gone to any of the four nominations (Mummy Mohlahlo, Katlego Letlonkane, Gladys Sithole and Ayanda Nkosi) but in the end Mummy took the honours, deservedly so it must be said. Furthermore, her seductive voice can be heard on the Continental Breakfast Show.

There were also a further four main awards handed out on the night as well as seven “funny” awards, which brought much humour to the evening. Below are the recipients:

2 Fast, too NICE!

The Morning Roadtrip

The Johannesburg International Motor Show is not just a display of light weight motor vehicles, it features anything that runs with a motor; from trucks to yachts. I had to start at the different vehicle stands from Citroen (said with an accent ofcourse) to the big boys Mercedes Benz and BMW who all brought out their big guns; SLR's to M3's, a veritable motor lovers dream.

Groupie!

Moving on from there we went to the premium motor stand where we saw the Rolls Royce Ghost that's when I officially got a groupie moment which I will proudly admit to. We ended the day with warm hands of Mercedes Benz team, in their hospitality area I spoke to the divisional Marketing manager Mr Selvin Governder about their plans as a brand for the near future. As for BMW's near future, well this is the i8, an electric hybrid with motors on every wheel, all its missing is machine guns.

Yoh!

All in all it was an awesome experience.

Unprecedented Growth, Record Number of International Game Developers and a Marriage Proposal

This place is going to blow! The Coca Cola Dome was bursting at the seams this past weekend with the latest video gaming and entertainment technology, as well as 26,594 rAge expo visitors!  Now in its 9th year, rAge, sponsored by Samsung, enjoyed an unprecedented turnout, increasing feet through the door by just over 29% from 2010.

“The explosive growth we have experienced with rAge is really a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire video gaming community and its media.  Driven by passion, the community has unwaveringly cultivated the gaming culture in South Africa to the massive beast that it is today; and we are proud to say that rAge is an integral part of this,” says Michael James, Senior Project Manager on rAge.

While visitors got their fill of mind-blowing gaming such as Darkness II and Battlefield 3 and many more seen for the first time at rAge, exhibitors also enjoyed the mass of tech-heads that stampeded the Dome over the 3-day period from 30 September – 02 October.

Besides the games, visitors managed to stock up on cutting-edge components for their next pc/console upgrade and indulge in gaming culture favourites such as the Legion Ink Cosplay Competition hosting a number of anime characters and, of course, Lara Crofts in all shapes and sizes.

This year saw a strong game developer contingent with international developers from Ghost Recon, Ubisoft and Rocksteady Studios revealing the inner workings of some of this year’s most anticipated games, such as Tomb Raider, Hitman and Batman: Arkham City.

“rAge 2011 was a huge success with massive foot traffic. I am sure it had catered for the most gamers in the history of this show and a strong media contingency was felt. Nu Metro's Batman stand was a certain hit with the public and we created excellent word of mouth for the upcoming game Batman: Arkham City!” says Stefan Rheeder, Marketing Manager: Nu Metro Interactive.

The anticipation for the year’s official highlight on the gaming calendar was tangible as gamers participating in the NAG LAN @ rAge started lining up from 02:00 on Friday morning.  The NAG LAN @ rAge kept 2,196 gamers engaged in fierce virtual battle for over 53 hours with various league competitions underway which identified the best players across the country in games such as Call of Duty Black Ops, Counterstrike and Starcraft 2. The NAG Gaming League (NGL) held their Call of Duty Black Ops finals on Sunday morning; where the two top clans, KK and vTL battled it out for the top honours of NGL rAge Champions.  Gamers participating in the NGL tournament were eligible to win over R95,000 in prizes sponsored by Incredible Connection and Plantronics.  The Telkom Do Gaming League (DGL) gave away R160,000 worth of prizes in their LAN Championships. Gamers from the DGL 2011 League competed in Call of Duty 4, Starcraft 2, FIFA 11, and Counter-Strike 1.6 over the course of the weekend.

“As always media interest was more than peaked and this year rAge is proud to have attracted attention from international press, verifying its position in the global gaming sphere.  Looking back, it often feels surreal to realise the role rAge plays within the South African gaming culture.  We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks for the support received from our sponsors, exhibitors and fellow gamers, without whom rAge would not have evolved into the institution it is today,” concludes Michael James, Senior Project Manager at rAge. “Oh, and congrats to the guy who proposed to his girlfriend in the LAN!”

Ah the rAge romance continues.

Tune into The Arcade every Friday @ 07h30 only on the Continental Breakfast for the latest in gaming new

SEXPO just keeps 'em coming

Sexpo

After much anticipation SEXPO hit Gauteng from the 29th Sept to the 2nd October 2011, with as much raunchiness and sensual appeal as we could have expected. The Health, Sexuality and Lifestyle Expo got pulses racing and jaws dropping with an uncensored yet tasteful approach to all things naughty.

Clash of the Cultures

Culture Clash

CultureClash is the Academy’s annual celebration (organized by it’s students) which showcases its talented student. Trained to overcome the challenges of a multi-format, multi-genre event, ASE’s students are involved in every aspect of CultureClash - from mixing, recording and filming the event, to planning,  and even performing! Since it’s inception in 2007, CultureClash has grown in attendance and stature, drawing some of the top entertainment acts in the country. This year’s offering features over 40 acts in total, including award winning artists like Zebra & Giraffe, Gang of Instrumentals, EvolverOne, Ashtray Electric, Voodoo Child and many more top artists.

CultureClash was created to create awareness in the audio industry of the college, it’s capabilities (and thereby to create opportunities for ASE’s students); and to create a vibrant, dynamic and challenging event to give ASE students a taste of the industry they will enter. All aspects of the Academy’s various courses in
Music Production, Broadcasting, Live and Post Production are required for CultureClash; giving students a chance to show-off their skills, and learn under pressure. Proceeds from CultureClash benefit historically disadvantaged students.
